Andrzej Jakubowiak
Andrzej Jakubowiak MD, PhD, is an internationally known expert on multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells in a patient’s bone marrow. He works closely with the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC) to bring the latest treatments to the patient’s bedside as quickly as possible.
After attaining his medical degree from the Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Andrzej Jakubowiak extended his medical training through undertaking an internship and residency with his university of study. Thereafter, he undertook a substantial amount of further training and development through an additional residency with the University of Texas Health Science Center and fellowships with Weill Medical College of Cornwell University and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Jakubowiak currently conducts research on Multiple Myeloma at the University of Chicago – an urban, research-driven university committed to free and open inquiry – as the Director of the Multiple Myeloma Program. He is the lead investigator on a number of multi-site clinical trials for patients who are are newly diagnosed, have relapsed or are facing refractory disease. He works closely with the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium to bring the latest treatments to his patients in a quick and efficient manner.
Dr. Jakubowiak is a distinguished and influential member of the medical world. Over the course of his career, he has contributed over 50 peer-reviewed articles and 14 book chapters to his field. He is frequently invited to lecture and to present his research findings at medical conferences and meetings around the world. As a result, he has gained a strong reputation and the merits of his work have been acknowledged globally. As well his association with the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium, he is a member of the following associations: the Alliance for Clinical Trials Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
Dr. Jakubowiak’s primary research focus is in the development of new drugs for the treatment of multiple myeloma. He is currently the lead investigator on a number of multi-site clinical trials for patients who are newly diagnosed, have relapsed, or have refractory (resistant to treatment) disease. Dr. Jakubowiak has received research funding and several grants from the MMRC. He is also the recipient of many honors, including the Myeloma Center of the Year award by the MMRC in 2008 and 2010.
Dr. Andrzej Jakubowiak, MD, PHD, has been welcomed as “Best in Medicine” by the American Health Council for his outstanding contributions to the oncological field. Dr. Jakubowiak is a renowned specialist in the treatment of cancers of the blood, bone, marrow and lymph nodes (such as leukemia and lymphoma) and is internationally recognized for his work on the development and testing of new drugs to treat Multiple Myeloma.
Dr. Jakubowiak credits an excellent educational environment for his growing successes in the field. He believes his ambition, matched with his resilience and a durable work ethic, have led him to become the important, influential member of the healthcare community he is today. Growing up, Dr. Jakubowiak bore witness to his father’s successes and regarded him a significant role-model. He believes his father’s teachings and values have been key drivers in his success and he hopes to instill the same values in his children as they aspire towards their own goals. Above all, Dr. Jakubowiak believes his success is fueled by his desire to create a valuable difference in the lives of his patients.
In the coming years, Dr. Jakubowiak will continue to work alongside his colleagues on the development of a treatment for Multiple Myeloma. Their discoveries have the potential to create a significant and positive impact on the evolvement of treatment for the cancer. He is wholly devoted to the endeavor.
When he is not working, Dr. Jakubowiak enjoys spending his free time with his wife, children and grandchildren
